This text tackles the subject of programming and the design of algorithms using sound problem solving techniques. It concentrates on the work that needs to be done before the computer program is coded and examines the use of tools (including use statements, screen layouts, event-response tables, test cases, and pseudocode) programmers can use to assist with the development of maintainable algorithms.

Visual programming languages have recently become very popular and this book uses Microsoft Visual Basic as the implementation language for many of the algorithms discussed. Basic is a language that has often been accused of presenting a poor introduction to programming, yet it is certainly possible to use Visual Basic in a structured manner as this text clearly shows.

This text, now in its 4th edition, has been used very successfully in computer science and information systems courses on introductory computer programming at a number of Australian universities.

The current edition is based on the use of Visual Basic version 5.0 and comes with a disk of examples and sample programs.

(Earlier editions of the book, which were designed for use with Visual Basic version 3.0 and version 4.0, are still also available. Please contact the publisher for details.)

Chapter titless are: problem solving and computer programming, defining the problem, data input program variables and data types, pseudocode and control structures, testing and debugging a program, modules and parameter passing, functions, sequential files, data and control arrays, records and databases, documenting the system, random access files, searching sorting and grouping, solutions to selected exercises, Visual Basic: language and objects.
